Thank you so much for helping. It means so much that people care. I've felt so isolated as a result of the attack. Red Guard here in KC is still showing up to events and everything so I don't go out anymore. Thank you so much for reminding me that there are a lot of really caring people out there in the world still. In solidarity, Brianna <3

More Info

In her words: "We were attacked by Red Guard Maoist (an offshoot of a Marxist Leninist Maoist Communist cult called Shining Path) in Kansas City on Oct 12, 2019 at a film screening of the Charlie Chaplin movie "The Great Dictator" for antifascist days of unity. Carl, a disabled, elderly, anti-war vet and Brianna's partner, was attacked by Red Guard who were angry at DSA for endorsing Bernie and also for telling Red Guard to stop trying to undermine the local UAW strike effort by shit talking the UAW leadership on a UAW picket line. Carl didn't happen to have anything to do with either of those things though he of course agreed in the background that they should not have tried to undermine UAW.

After taking a couple of swipes at him and knocking his glasses off, one of them yelled at him "Haha we broke your glasses you arthritic old man" and then started their attack in earnest. A childcare worker was also attacked by 8 of them and got punched in the face at least 7 times as they tried to get past him to join in the attack on Carl. Carl was particularly brutally beaten by one who seemed to be bent on killing him. This 220lb guy tackled Carl, jumped on his chest to knock the wind out of him, pinned his arms down, and when Carl was completely unable to defend himself the guy started punching him in the face.

I got under the guy and shielded Carl's head from any further blows. The guy did not slow his attack at all and didn't hesitate to beat me, a disabled older woman with neck and spinal injuries. Carl ended up with scalp staples, bruises, and pulled muscles (though it turns out his glasses weren't broken). I ended up with bruises, a cracked rib, and pulled muscles.

They launched this attack at SEIU, you know, the janitors union hall. There was a DACA clinic going on at the time. At least one person left the clinic in tears and didn't get their paperwork done. When it was all said and done, the film started at the scheduled time, the groups that meet at SEIU were all unfazed so all Red Guard managed to do that day was beat an older disabled couple and prevent a woman from renewing her DACA papers.

Red Guard already hated me after I bailed one of their members out of jail twice and got her a lawyer. They wrote a gigantic essay about how much I suck because I once said on social media that organizations should not beat innocent people. In that essay, which they tried to sell copies of on Facebook for $1, they also swore they would put all their energy and resources into taking me and my friends out.

They have been successful in their goals. I no longer go to protests or do jail support. A few months after the attack, I drove out to a protest and as I was looking at the crowd, I realized that all of them look like Red Guard to me. I swear I will never bail another stranger or casual acquaintance out of jail again just to have them turn around and attack me. People casually mentioned to me that Red Guard was still showing up to events, there were no repercussions for them at all for this. My back and rib are still in pain from where the dude was kicking me and they probably will be for the rest of my life. Being older, I just don't heal like I used to. Now, on top of all that I've been sent to collections for not being able to pay the emergency room bill."

Donations in excess of the amount on the page will go toward paying to repair her truck which was hit while parked by an uninsured driver. Funds in excess of that will go toward covering losses from a break in at the KC IWOC office.
